The mid year assignment was to take six photos of power lines or playgrounds to help showcase what we have learned in the first half of the year. Of the six photos that I took, I believe that this one is the best photo. Within this photo I tried to focus on the elements of line, texture, point of view, and the rule of thirds. The element of lines is shown through the powerlines. The power lines are supposed to be the focal point of the photo shoot, but they also create lines that draw the viewer's attention to the shapes that they create and the focal point at which they start. Texture is shown in the clouds. The viewer can see the edges of the clouds in the sky which creates texture within the image which makes the image more visually intriguing. Point of view is created because I took the photo from underneath the power lines which draws the viewer's eyes to the sky and the power lines rather than a distracting background of houses and buildings. By changing the point of view when taking the photo you allow for the object you are trying to photograph to become the focal point instead of it potentially becoming the background. Lastly, is the rule of thirds. The image allows for the rule of thirds because if you put a grid on the image all three sections there would be something filling the grid. Although every section would be filled to make the photo more balanced the image is offset so that the image is more visually appealing.
To take this photo I had to make sure that the settings were appropriate for the time of day that the photo was shot so that the photo came out clear. The ISO was 20 because the photo was taken around twilight and it was cloudy outside. The sun was beginning to set and the clouds were covering the sun except in a few spots. The white balance was set at cloudy, twilight, sunset so that way the power lines were in focus and show up clearly. Shutter speed was 1/530 sec which is a fast shutter speed which allows for the tree and powerlines to be shown even if they were moving in the wind. Lastly, the aperture was 1.4 (iPhone 8) which is a low f stop allowing for a shallow depth of field which allows for the powerlines to be in focus and the background to be less in focus.
I think this is the best or most interesting photo because of the powerlines and clouds. The clouds create a sense of calmness due to the coloring and the powerlines create a leading line which draws your eyes to the clouds. There are no extra elements that keep the viewer engaged or interested other than the coloring in the sky.
